Tracing our ancestry
A collaborative project with Te Papa
Is this your Grandfather?
We’re working with the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa to identify the portraits of our forefathers and foremothers who had their portraits taken at the Cuba Photographic Studio, Wellington in the 1930’s and 1940’s.

Portraits of the Wellington Indian Community
Many of these portraits are nameless. It would be an incredible achievement to give names to these 100 or so portraits and if possible, their history for our future generations to add to their genealogy especially as the Wellington Indian Association approaches its 100th anniversary in 2025.
Recognise anyone?
To give identity and history to these early Indian pioneers please provide as much information as you can in the questionnaire. Where possible:
include the photo ID so the information about the portrait you provided can be matched with the Te Papa Portrait Collection;
proof of identity to verify the portrait if possible e.g. copy of their passport with the same image;
include your permission by signing the questionnaire; and
include your contact details in case we have any questions.
Thank you for your interest and participation in this project. We hope the portraits bring back memories of your parents and grandparents and those who have touched your family’s lives, and an opportunity to share their stories with family and friends. It may start you and your family on a journey to discover the achievements of the pioneers in your family and how proud they would be today reflecting on where they started and what their children and grandchildren have achieved.
